Debt Clock Runs Out of Digits

It’s hard to fathom what trillions of dollars look like - but here’s a visual to help you put it in context. The debt is now SO BIG that the Times Square National Debt Clock has run out of numbers to record the figure. Run! Out! Of! Numbers!

$10, 149, 644, 933, 872
You OWE this amount: $ 86,017

The clock was invented and installed by real estate mogul Seymour Durst in 1989 and taken over after his death by Durst’s son Douglas in 1995. The national debt was at $2.7 trillion when the clock was erected. Just for laughs - another Republican was in office at that time as well - Ronald Reagan.

As a temporary fix, the $ has been dropped from the sign to make room for the one. Word is that the company will replace the clock with a new 15-digit version (vs. the current 13-digit design) to make room for the $ … and the extra trillions that may get tacked on as Wall Street continues to tank.
